Our Host Family Community
Host Families are a fundamental aspect of the program’s purpose and impact.
By placing students in homes of residents of the DC metropolitan region for 2 months, they are exposed to what it means to live in DC, not just to visit. The students gain an improved understanding of US culture and are integrated into a community. These relationships are greatly appreciated by our students and host families alike, and have built many lifelong friendships.
In return to offering a home to our students, Host Families become an integral part of our program. They develop a relationship as the island of Ireland’s brightest young leaders, are welcome participants in our discussions and talks, and join a community of WIP’s friends and supporters.
Host families are not paid for their participation. Students are between the ages of 18-25 and are in full time education. Host families come in all shapes and sizes; they can be single or married, and may include young children, older children, or no children at all. We ask that host families live within walking distance of public transportation as the students are not allowed to drive.
We will open for registration for host families in early November, but if you’d like to find out more contact Claire at our DC office – 202.772.3824
