WIP at the Irish Presidential Residence

As part of WIP’s 20th Anniversary Celebrations, President Michael D Higgins and Sabina Higgins welcomed WIP’s Board and Alums in to their home.

Speaking at the event, President Higgins praised WIP’s work noting:

“Since its foundation as “The Young Leaders Program”, in 1994, your organisation has encouraged several hundred young people from Ireland, North and South, to take an active part in the shaping of their shared future, by committing to personal and professional excellence, and by pushing their intellectual and professional curiosity beyond existing cultural, social and even familial boundaries.

Through their involvement in the Program, these young people have been given the opportunity to explore novel and exciting work environments; they have enjoyed the generous hospitality of their American host families; they have forged enduring bonds of friendship with fellow program participants from other parts of Ireland – parts of the island with which they may not have been familiar and people from communities with whom they may never have previously engaged.

These are most valuable gifts bestowed upon the lives of young Irish people, and I would like, as President of Ireland, to avail of this occasion to thank all of those who, year after year, have ensured the perpetuation and development of the Washington Ireland Program.”
